WHO WE ARE

Our Mission

Our Values

Origin of
Our Name

For many who call Hawaiʻi home, the ʻumeke, or calabash bowl, holds a place of deep cultural significance, serving not just as a vessel for meals but as a cherished heirloom, weaving together generations of family history. In traditional Hawaiian households, families would gather to share meals in an ʻumeke. When these bowls showed signs of wear, exhibiting cracks from years of use, they were not simply discarded. Instead, Hawaiian craftsmen used a pewa, or fishtail joint, a woodworking technique that not only mended but strengthened the ʻumeke. This practice exemplified a profound respect for resources and a commitment to sustainability, in contrast to the disposable culture that has led to the poisoning of our oceans by plastic waste.

Inspired by this legacy of environmental stewardship and community, Pewa Group takes its name and ethos from this practice.
